Description
Following my experience with weaving at the Textile Art Center, I pursued further studies in weaving in Nishijin, Kyoto, a renowned hub for textile production. This particular piece utilizes a technique known as Tsuzure weaving, which has its origins in Egyptian Coptic weaving and has uniquely developed in Nishijin, Kyoto. I crafted this piece using discarded paper threads from Yoshida Kobo on a secondhand loom acquired from the Nishijin Textile Center.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese citizens protested the country's stringent regulations using white paper. Upon receiving the white paper threads, I felt compelled to create an artwork inspired by this event. To symbolize China, I incorporated the image of the beloved panda, "Huan Hua." The white areas of the panda's face and body were woven with these white threads. White traditionally symbolizes purity, cleanliness, and divinity, but it can also represent emptiness. However, this incident demonstrated that white paper can convey messages more powerfully than thousands of words.
To symbolize the ineffectiveness of the white paper protest in reaching the government, I included shredded paper within the piece.
